| Name: | Ferid Egan Falenas |
|---|
Star Position: He's not special enough to have a star....
Age: At the time of his death, he was 37.
Appearance: Ferid looks to be about his age. He is an adult of average height for his age (6'0"). He has shoulder-length brown hair adorned in what seems to be a common Falenan style: a portion is tied into a high, loose bun while the rest falls freely down. He has dark brown eyes and a small upside down triangular beard right beneath a mouth that almost always seems to be grinning. He wears the Queen's Knight uniform of black and gold clothing and has his sword by his side at all times.
Personality: Ferid doesn't exactly live up to the regal image one might normally imagine for the King of Falena. He is extremely easy going in nature for a person of royal rank. He tends to talk to everyone as equals rather than as subordinates. This is probably because, unlike past Falenan kings, he wasn't raised as a member of the politically charged nobility. Apparently becoming king and captain of the Queen's Knights hasn't changed his casual demeanor during the years. If he were dressed in normal clothes, it's doubtful anyone would even suspect him of being royalty.
One trait he has that certainly doesn't denote royal standing is the acceptance of casual and free speech. Though people refer to him in formal address, he doesn't seem to care much if people speak to him or his children casually or formally. In fact when some people, like Georg, do it, he actually finds it creepy. In a very memorable scene, Ferid expresses his appreciation of honesty alongside loyalty and encourages freedom of speech and opinions among the ranks.
Though lenient, Ferid knows exactly when it's necessary to be serious. It's here that his qualities as a leader begin to show. Excluding his own personal bias as much as possible, he tends to think of the good of the whole when trying to think of solutions or make decisions.
Ferid's a doting father all the way. He has an immense amount of adoration and affection for both his son and daughter and obviously loves his wife a great deal. When she took up the Sun Rune, he became worried for her mental stability. The way the rune warped her personality was frightening and disturbing, but most of all, he couldn't stand seeing his wife's heart break in dismay at her own behavior when she regained her senses.
It tore his heart apart to decide that if worse came to worse, there might be a time in which he might not be able to stop the Sun Rune's influence. At which point, he would have to make the decision of killing Arshtat for the good of saving the country he ruled. However, he understood his own limitations. Imagining killing his wife should the need arise and actually doing it were two different things. If he wasn't able to bring himself to do the responsible thing due to his love for his wife or some other factor, he entrusted the task to Georg. This way, it was guaranteed the right decision would be made. His loyalty to his duty is astounding.
Weapons: Ferid is an excellent swordsman matched by few in Falena besides Georg. His weapon is the large bastard sword he is able to wield with an impressive amount of speed considering its size.
Skills/Special Abilities: Ferid has a good amount of energy and endurance for fighting. He can fight for a long time before becoming entirely exhausted. He seems good at breaking up arguments and quickly identifying ways for all sides to come to terms. Ferid isn't a violent person, but fighting is where his expertise lies.
Other Abilities: Ferid apparently is a good actor, since he was able to talk to Gizel at the Engagement Ceremony like they were old buddies, even though he knew that Gizel was planning an attack that very same evening. Being that he traveled alone for so long, he is able to do simple cooking as well as some basic first aid (though he's really not a healer).
Runes: Ferid has actually never had any interest in runes whatsoever. Though many warriors choose to equip runes, Ferid has never done so, nor does he plan to.
Weaknesses: As mentioned above, Ferid has no runes of any kind. He has absolutely no magical abilities for either healing, offensive, or defensive purposes. Though Ferid is an excellent swordsman, his strength is more in power than in speed, so a fast fighter can easily gain the upper hand on him. His biggest weakness, however, would have to be his love for his family and friends. His decision to end his wife's life should the need arise shows that he is willing to make sacrifices for the greater good if need be, but since he entrusted the execution of this task to another, he has little faith in himself in this regard. Should his friends or, more importantly, his family ever be used against him, his resolve and rationale may falter.
History: Even at a very young age, Ferid had established himself to be an excellent swordsman. He was raised in the Island Nations with a good number of brothers and sisters for companions. Though he certainly loved his home, he left the Island Nations and his family behind never to return. This being the case, he never learned the identity of Bernadette as his sister, nor would he ever have the chance to meet her.
Ferid spent a great deal of time traveling on his own, eventually coming to the Queendom of Falena with the bold goal of winning the hand of Princess Arshtat during the Sacred Games, a battle championship used to determine who the princess's husband will be. During the Sacred Games, the majority of the competitors for the Princess's hand consisted of noblemen, so there was much controversy as to whether they should let "some backwater barbarian" compete for the Falenan throne. After actually meeting with Ferid herself, Princess Arshtat seemed to like him enough to defend his right to compete in the games.
Picking up a sword and fighting for himself, Ferid excelled in The Sacred Games, blowing past the gladiators the noblemen had hired to fight in their place and eventually winning the competition. Ferid married Princess Arshtat, but it was only after the brutal civil war between Arshat's mother and aunt had come to a resolution that Arshtat became queen and Ferid became king and Commander of the Queen's Knights.
Using the chaos of the civil war to their advantage, Armes (a neighboring Kingdom) invaded Falenan land. Alongside dragon horse leader Craig Laden, Admiral Raja from Rafleet, and the strategist Lucretia Merces, Ferid fought on the front lines of the second brutal war to strike the country. Their victories out on the field with Arshtat's negotiative abilities led to a favorable and diplomatic end to the war.
Sometime in his travels during the war, Ferid meets Georg Prime. Ferid evidently helped him during a battle, leading the two skilled swordsmen to work together for a while and become good friends. It would be later, around the time Ferid's children are a little older, that Ferid would ask him to join the Queen's Knights.
After the Armes war, Ferid and Arshtat worked hard to bring reform to the country. Though they wished to disband the cruel gladiator system the country used, the noblemen and Senate created far too much of an uproar to do so. Instead, they improved the conditions of gladiators, making it illegal to kill or mistreat them.
Most importantly, they used all of their influence to disband the assassin's group Nether Gate, the organization used by nobleman and royalty alike. It was this organization that claimed the lives of Godwin noblemen as well as Arshat's father and uncle during the civil war.
During the disbandment of the group, Ferid found a little girl, an assassin within Nether Gate named Mismar. To free her from the horrible life of a killer, he takes her to Falena and takes her in. He gives her the name Lyon and lets her train as an apprentice Queen's Knight, eventually becoming the Prince's personal body guard.
The Prince was the first child to be born to the royal family, followed soon after by the princess Lymsleia, both of which Ferid plays doting father to. Ferid adores Lymsleia very much, though he tries not to spoil her. Both he and the queen feel it's important she study and prepare herself as the future Queen of the country, but seeing as she is still very young, he doesn't mind her goofing off on occasion. The thought of marrying her off horrifies him. Ferid is incredibly fond of his son as well. Though the Prince will not be inheriting the throne, Ferid feels it's just as important to have him exposed to diplomacy and politics. These are part of being a good person as well as a good leader.
There was a random uprising at some point in which the East Palace was attacked and the Dawn Rune (one of the three runes of Falena) was stolen. There was suspicion on the Barowes nobility, though there was evidence that some in Lordlake were involved. The tactician Lucretia, who had been working for Godwin at this point in time, betrayed her employer, telling Arshtat that the Godwin Faction was planning to take the Sun Rune (another run of Falena) for themselves. She suggested that the Queen bear the Sun Rune herself to prevent it from being taken, despite the fact that the Sun Rune was rumored to be one of the legendary True Runes and was said to seduce any who bore it with its power.
The Queen took Lucretia's advice but found herself confused and overtaken by the Rune's will. Eventually, she turned her rage toward Lordlake, releasing the power of the Sun Rune and decimating the land and water in the area. It was after this that Ferid made two important decisions.
Firstly, he vowed to keep an eye on her and stay by her side as much as possible. It seemed when the Sun Rune started to take over the Queen's reasoning, the sound of his voice was enough to snap Arshtat back to reality. To prevent another tragedy as that which struck Lordlake, he had to stay closer to her. Unfortunately, they knew they could not rid her of the rune.
Secondly, he brought his friend Georg (see earlier) to Falena to serve as a member of the Queen's Knights. Confiding in Georg, he tells him of the horror of the Sun Rune and how it affects the Queen's mind. He has Georg promise that if Ferid is not around and there is no other way to stop her, he is to slay the Queen for the good of protecting the country from the Rune's destruction.
With the Dawn Rune still missing and the issue unresolved, political duties must continue. The time Ferid has been dreading is upon him: The Sacred Games for his daughter Lymsleia. With the nobility's power-hungry hounds running in from all directions seeking his daughter's hand in marriage, Ferid is more than a little uncomfortable. He, unfortunately, has to ignore his feelings for his duty and travels with the royal family to Stormfist to watch The Sacred Games.
During the games, a huge mess begins to erupt. Firstly, there is a contestant outside of the nobility participating in the Sacred Games: Belcoot. Many citizens, fearing another outsider might attain the throne, do everything in their power to try disqualifying him or beating him. Though he can't do anything about it personally (it would look like the royal family was favoring a participant), he has the Prince, the Queen's sister Sialeeds, Georg, and Lyon keep an eye on Belcoot for the good of his safety. They could always "accidentally" help, right?
In addition, there were rumors of an Armes plot to assassinate the Queen during The Sacred Games. In the mess, one of the gladiators (the one for the Barowes family) is framed for the crime. Ferid and the Queen both realize something is up and prevent the gladiator from being executed, instead choosing to take him "prisoner" in Falena.
In all of this mayhem, Belcoot is poisoned with a serum from the supposedly disbanded Nether Gate (thanks to a Godwin plot). Apparently, the organization is still around and fully operational to the displeasure of the royal family. Due to this, Belcoot cannot continue his progression through The Sacred Games, and the Godwin Faction wins, making Gizel Godwin the Princess' fiancée.
Between Belcoot, his regretting poisoner Marina, the framed gladiator Zegai, and what can be pieced together from the information the Prince's entourage had gathered, the Arshtat and Ferid came to the conclusion that Gizel had Nether Gate under his thumb and was plotting against the Falenan royal family. Unfortunately, they couldn't act against Godwin without solid evidence of this, but what they COULD do was prepare a counterattack.
It was more than likely Godwin was planning to attack the royal family during the Engagement Ceremony. Calling in Dr. Murad (a doctor from Stormfist who knew of Belcoot's poisoning), they devise an antidote to Nether Gate's poison and plan to have everyone take it before they eat any of the banquet food that night. When Gizel decided to strike, they would all be awake and ready. In secret, Ferid meets with Georg and reminds him of his promise.
On the night of the ceremony, all goes as expected, and the castle is up and awake to face Nether Gate. Unfortunately, Nether Gate was so well trained that the castle is still at the disadvantage. Everyone becomes separated and begins fighting for their lives.
Ferid stays by Arshtat's side during the entire attack, protecting her from the attacking assassins. During the fight, a Godwin guard aims an arrow at Ferid. Before he can shoot, Arshtat uses the Sun Rune to blow him apart. Though this saves Ferid's life, it causes the Queen to become insane, and she threatens to kill everyone. Ferid rushes over to her to calm her down but she suddenly uses the Rune to attack him. Before he disintegrates completely, he offers her a smile and tells her he loves her.
He has long been dead, but to him barely a second has passed. Within the blink of an eye, he finds himself at Budhec's gates, very much alive somehow…
